This study is a systematic review of art therapy research that has performed meta-analysis classified as the highest level of evidence in order to practice Evidence Based Practice (EBP) for art therapy research. A total of 24 papers were selected as study objects according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. This study was organized by being classified into the publication trends by year, the characteristics of the study objects, the number of included study, the design of the included study, the type of included literature, and the results of meta-analysis. In terms of the characteristics of study objects, studies on children and adolescents appeared remarkably high. The number of included studies for meta-analysis varied from 14 to 223 papers. In the design of the included study, the studies limited to the design of the pre- and post-tests for experimental and control groups were 80%, accounting for the high proportion. As a result of meta-analysis, the art therapy intervention effect size ES(g) was distributed from 0.52 to 2.485, and the average effect size of 17 articles among the study subjects was found to be a large effect size based on Cohen (1988). In other words, it was found that the effect of art therapy intervention was quite large. This study is meaningful in that it presents a detailed report of the overall effect of art therapy so that large-scale clinical studies, long-term studies, and follow-up studies that can know the maintenance effect can be conducted in the field of art therapy.
